Mambo N* 11

...Charlie.
He's got your skin, you know.
He reminds me of you.
The camera shining
On the surface
Of the bags
Underneath his eyes.
His luggage
From who knows where
To who knows what.
He reminds me of you;
His hair,
The way he shuffles his feet
Dangling his arms from side to side.
He reminds me of you
His eczema
Only worse
Than yours
When you were on drugs.
You promised me
You weren't going to do them
Anymore
The first time;
I could trace their absence
On your lips
I could taste your despair
In mine.
I remember
Running my hands
Down your cheeks;
Their roughness
Against this soft skin
Of mine,
You touched my breasts
I let you
Your hands were soft
Yet dry...
But
You remind me of Charlie
Or rather
Charlie reminds me of you
Sometimes.
The 80's would have suit you well
I know
And so would have I.

You said you loved me
You weren't sure
But you did say
I tasted like something
Like
Something like
love;
You told me you had loved a girl
Recited me her poems
The ones you wrote for her
I feel their syllables reverberate
Against the tremor
Of your pale green eyes.

You are really pale, actually
So is Charlie
So am I;
But my skin is soft as feathers
And yours is more like leather
So is his
Not mine.

You have the same eyelashes
I imagine,
I can see myself reflected
In your eyes
I could see the way you saw me
I'm scared
"Stay the night";
I ran.

I can see you
Standing on the doorway
Our last time.
You are wearing your pijamas
Or your boxers
I feel your knees,
Against my thighs.

You breathe so slowly
Yet so profoundly,
I want to touch you
But I can't.

I'm sorry

But it feels like you're burning
Ever so brightly
You seem happy
In my arms.

I don't melt in yours.
I just can't.

You were so broken
So is Charlie
So am I;
Broken pieces can't be put together
To form a whole
That's what I told you
While you held my breasts
In your hands.

You said you didn't want to let go
I escaped
How could I?

I was scared
So was Charlie
So are you
So we are.

I read on the news
That Charlie was deported
Cocaine
They said it was;
I thought of you
As I saw his picture

It was your sadness
I saw on paper
Reflected
In his eyes.

He looks like you,
Doesn't he?
He looks like you

"Don't you think he looks like Jack?" ....
